the creation of “off beat”
Reka Gyulai has crafted the 2024 world premiere of Off Beat with a fresh focus and a distinctly current take on the music. The spotlight moves to the bright and whimsical eccentricity of Reka's movement in this original score by Katya Richardson.
Beginning in the summer of 2023, preparations were underway for the first Pointeworks performance. The vision was to curate an evening of classical ballet, highlighting the voices of female artists and choreographers on today's stages. Pointeworks aimed to showcase both the future and history of ballet through the presentation of existing masterpieces and fresh new commissions.
Pointeworks sought to commission a fresh, original, and uniquely Southern Californian piece for the debut performance. We were interested in finding a collaboration with choreographer Reka Gyulai's talent and local music. A wonderful discovery was Katya's musical work. For Reka, it was an instant and motivating connection. Finding the appropriate music is essential to Reka's choreographic approach, stemming from her musical upbringing of playing the cello. The choreography seamlessly fell into place to the riveting notes of Katya's compositions, "Sand Slings" and "III." Off Beat, a phenomenal collaboration between these two artists is slated to open the inaugural performance of Pointeworks on June 20th at The Conrad Theater.
