This new work will be a collaboration with a female composer, continuing Nichols’ commitment to elevating female voices in the creative process.
West Coast Premieres:
Chasing Shadows - choreographer Laine Habony
A choreographer from New York City Ballet, celebrated for her dynamic and refreshing approach to contemporary ballet. Laine’s Chasing Shadows, set to an original score by female composer Katie Jenkins and performed live by pianist Joshua Mhoon, makes its West Coast premiere after a sold-out, debut in New York City in March 2025. The piece is also brought to life through beautiful costumes designed by a Lauren Starobin. Chasing Shadows was described by Dance Informa as "special for a special reason"—it was the first time that sisters Claire, Emma, and Nicole Von Enck performed together as professional dancers. The review continues, “The result made me feel like a little girl again, when magic was still real and dreams unmarred by reality. The Von Enck sisters, dancing the charming choreography of Habony, became those fairies to me.” This enchanting work blends beauty and emotional depth, leaving a lasting impression on all who witness it.
It’s Deep, It’s Dark - choreographer DaYoung Jung
Presenting the West Coast premiere of It’s Deep, It’s Dark, a powerful new work that debuted to incrdible reviews in New York City in March 2025. The costumes for Jung’s piece are designed by Susan Roemer, continuing the theme of elevating female artists. Jung’s choreography explores the depths of human emotion through expressive movement and athleticism. The dancers' eyes and movements offer a glimpse into their inner feelings—emotions often left unspoken. As Jung shares, “My hope is that the audience will feel a genuine connection with the dancers, the music, and the story they wish to share through this ballet.”
"Carousel" Duet by Christopher Wheeldon: This timeless piece, accompanied by live piano orchestration, offers an enchanting contrast to the evening’s contemporary works with its whimsical charm, sweeping audiences off their feet.
